At the 5th International Conference on Water Storage and Hydropower Development for Africa (AFRICA2025) held in Accra, Ghana, officials from Uganda and Ghana formalized a pivotal cross-country collaboration. Eng. Dr. Harrison E. Mutikanga, Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), and Ing. Kow Eduakwa Sam, CEO of Ghana\u2019s Bui Power Authority (BPA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster technical exchange, knowledge sharing, and capacity building between the two utilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A key highlight of the conference was a technical tour where a Ugandan delegation, led by UEGCL Board Chairperson Proscovia Margaret Njuki, visited Ghana\u2019s Bui infrastructure, including the dam, floating and land-based solar installations, and control facilities. UEGCL <\/p>\n\n\n\n
engineers were especially impressed by BPA\u2019s pioneering solar innovations and hybrid energy strategies, which resonated strongly with Uganda\u2019s drive to diversify its generation mix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under this MoU, specialists from both institutions will participate in engineer exchanges, joint workshops, and operational training. UEGCL stands to gain valuable insights into solar-hydro integration, a field increasingly vital to our strategy of reducing hydropower dependence. Meanwhile, BPA will benefit from Uganda\u2019s operational experience across legacy and new hydropower sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This alliance underscores the rising importance of South\u2013South cooperation in Africa\u2019s energy transition.
