For more than a month, the people of Oriau Village in Aleles Parish, Akoboi Sub County lived under the scorching sun with no sound sweeter than the splash of water. Their borehole—their lifeline—had fallen silent, its iron ribs broken, its heart stilled.
Women and children trudged long, dusty paths in search of water, often returning home with aching backs and heavy jerrycans.
This week, however, joy returned to Oriau. Through the intervention of Hon. Peter Ogwang, State Minister for Education and Sports and MP for Ngariam County, the borehole has been repaired and water once again gushes freely. The pipes and rods required for the repair were delivered by his Personal Assistant, Mr. Malinga Micheal Arudong, breathing life back into the village.
The residents could not hide their relief.
“We had suffered enough. Every morning we rose not to fetch water, but to chase it—walking to the next village just to fill a jerrycan. Some of our children missed school. Today, we can finally say our MP has heard our cry,” said Mrs. Akol Jennifer, her voice mingling gratitude with relief.
Mr. Edeku Samuel another villager, added: “Water is life, and now life has returned to us. We thank Hon. Ogwang for remembering us. This borehole is not just metal and pipes; it is dignity restored.”
As laughter and splashing water replaced silence and dust, community leaders pledged to safeguard the borehole, ensuring it serves generations to come.
For Oriau, the story is no longer about thirst and long walks, but about a leader who listened, and a borehole that sings again.
