To assess, monitor groundwater and surface water resources to generate accurate information to guide sustainable development and use of water resources aimed at guarantying water security, food security, energy security and public safety, for both the present and future generation of Uganda.
The Water Resource Monitoring and Assessment Department, under the Directorate of Water Resources Management, is tasked with generating reliable and up-to-date data on the quantity and quality of Uganda’s water resources. This data is essential for informed decision-making, policy formulation, planning, and regulation of water use across various sectors. The department carries out nationwide monitoring through hydrological and hydrogeological networks, water quality surveillance, and remote sensing technologies. It supports critical functions such as flood and drought forecasting, groundwater mapping, and water balance analysis, which are crucial for climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness. By producing annual water resources assessments and technical reports, the department ensures stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, and the public, have access to actionable water information. Through this scientific approach to monitoring and assessment, the department plays a central role in protecting Uganda’s water ecosystems, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring long-term water security for all.
