Water Management Zones and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
Key Strategies and Catchment-Based Management
To implement the Water Sector Reform started in 2006, the Ministry of Water and Environment established Water Management Zones to decentralize water resources management through Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). This approach enables localized oversight at zone and catchment levels, addressing challenges such as environmental degradation, pollution, floods, and droughts. Key initiatives like the Mpanga Catchment Conservation Project and the National Water Resources Strategy highlight the importance of water for socio-economic sectors including agriculture, hydropower, fisheries, industry, and tourism. Catchment-Based Water Resources Management (CbWRM) promotes collaboration across sectors to ensure efficient, sustainable, and resilient water resource use.
