Rural Growth Centres water supply projects in Rakai District

Core Objective: To significantly improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities for communities in Rakai District, addressing long-standing water-related challenges.

Funding and Implementation: Primarily funded by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank. Implemented by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department (RWSSD) under the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE).

Project Area and Beneficiaries: The project focuses on Rakai District, specifically targeting:

  • 18 villages in 3 sub-counties: Kibaale Town Council, Kibanda Sub-County, and Mweruka Sub-County.
  • 21 villages in 2 sub-counties: Kagamba and Kisakala.

In total, the project will serve 39 villages across 5 sub-counties in Rakai District, benefiting local communities by providing safe water and improved sanitation.

Key Components and Activities:

  • Construction of 2 new borehole pumping houses.
  • Installation of 2 submersible pumps.
  • Construction of pumping mains, transmission mains, and distribution networks.
  • Provision of disinfection facilities and solar energy-powered pumping systems.
  • Construction of new storage reservoirs and water offices.
  • Chain link fencing for site security.
  • Installation of 10 public service posts and 190 service connections.
  • Construction of 3 sanitation facilities (VIP latrines and a waterborne facility).

Project Status: Nearing completion, with ongoing monitoring by the MWE team to ensure timely finalization. The project aims to address the critical need for clean water and sanitation in Rakai Distric
