Karamoja Umbrella of water and Sanitation (KUWS)

The Karamoja Umbrella of Water and Sanitation (KUWS) is a regional water utility operating under the Ministry of Water and Environment, dedicated to improving access to clean and safe water, as well as promoting better sanitation services across the Karamoja sub-region. Serving the districts of Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Karenga, Kotido, Moroto, and Napak, KUWS is responsible for the operation and maintenance of rural and small-town piped water supply systems, ensuring that communities have reliable and affordable access to essential water services. The utility also plays a key role in promoting hygiene education, conducting water quality monitoring, and implementing sanitation projects such as public latrines in schools and health centers. KUWS is actively involved in rehabilitating boreholes, installing solar-powered water systems, and delivering emergency water interventions in drought-prone areas. With a strong commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and gender equity, KUWS contributes significantly to Uganda’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation for all. The organization collaborates with local stakeholders, development partners, and the government to ensure that its services reach even the most underserved communities in the region.
