Inception Meeting For The Expansion of Chebombai Small-scale Irrigation Scheme in Amanang Subcounty- Bukwo District.
The Ministry of Water and Environment, through the Water for Production Regional Centre-East, has embarked on the expansion of the Chebombai Small-Scale Irrigation Scheme in Amanang Sub-County, Bukwo District.
Originally constructed between 2018 and 2022, the Chebombai Irrigation Scheme has now been in operation for three years. The scheme, initially designed to irrigate 8 acres of land, has far surpassed its intended capacity—currently supporting 15 core farmers, 54 out-growers, and supplying water to over 85 acres of farmland. Farmers in the scheme are successfully producing a variety of horticultural crops including onions, Irish potatoes, green peppers, wheat, and also running an integrated fish component.
This surge in demand for irrigation water and the scheme’s growing impact has prompted the Ministry to initiate an expansion aimed at supporting an additional 500 farmers from Amanang and Kapkoros areas. The planned works will extend the piped water network by 4 km—adding to the existing 4.7 km—ensuring increased agricultural production and improved productivity across a wider beneficiary base.
To kickstart this phase, an inception meeting was convened yesterday at Bukwo District Headquarters. The meeting, led by Assistant Manager, Engineer. Goden Nuwamanya from the Water for Production Regional Centre-East, brought together key district and sub-county officials. Attendees included the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bukwo District, Ms. Ajilong Bessie, the District Production Officer, the District Water Officer, and other technical officers and stakeholders.
During the session, officials were briefed on the scope of the expansion works, anticipated outcomes, and collaborative roles required for the successful implementation of the project. The meeting underscored the importance of sustainable management and community engagement as critical elements in ensuring the long-term success of the irrigation scheme.
The Ministry of Water and Environment remains committed to empowering farmers through enhanced irrigation infrastructure, contributing to improved livelihoods, food security, and economic development in Bukwo District and beyond.
