Kamida Mwanika is my name. I am one of the community members who received goats
as an alternative livelihood that the government gave us for voluntarily vacating the
Mpologoma wetland.
I am a member of the Gemakumwino Group, which benefited from the goat enterprise. I
received three goats, which have since multiplied to six. I sold four because I didn’t
have enough space to graze them. I was able to earn shs 700,000, out of which shs
550,000 was used to buy a bull.
The balance helped me handle other pressing needs including educating my children. I
have six children. One is at a technical school. One is in senior four. One is in Makerere
University, one got married and two are still at the Primary level.
I have plans to change the bull into a cow so it could produce, and I would be able to
milk. Part of the milk I would sell, while the balance improves our nutrition. I am
optimistic that my children will live a better life compared to when we hustled with
wetlands.
