Government-World Bank Partnership Brings Safe Water Access to 39 Villages

RAKAI DISTRICT – A comprehensive water supply initiative serving nearly 40 villages across Rakai District is nearing completion following a recent inspection by senior Ministry of Water and Environment officials.

Engineer James Seguya, leading the MWE inspection team, evaluated progress on the Mweruka and Lwentulege Rural Growth Centres water supply projects during his visit to the district. The ambitious infrastructure development, jointly funded by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank through the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP), represents a significant investment in rural water access.

The project encompasses extensive infrastructure development, including the construction of two new borehole pumping facilities equipped with submersible pumps and solar-powered systems. The initiative also features comprehensive water distribution networks, new storage reservoirs, and dedicated water management offices across the coverage area.

“This project addresses long-standing water challenges that have affected communities in Rakai District for years,” said a project spokesperson from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, which is implementing the initiative.

The infrastructure will serve 39 villages distributed across five sub-counties, including 18 villages in Kibaale Town Council, Kibanda, and Mweruka sub-counties, plus 21 villages in the Kagamba and Kisakala areas. The project includes 10 public service posts and 190 individual service connections, alongside three sanitation facilities featuring both VIP latrines and waterborne systems.

Security measures have been integrated into the project design, with chain-link fencing installed to protect critical infrastructure sites. The solar energy-powered pumping systems reflect the project’s commitment to sustainable water supply solutions.

District leadership and community representatives have expressed strong appreciation for the Ministry’s efforts to address regional water access challenges. The MWE team confirmed they will maintain regular monitoring to ensure timely project completion and optimal service delivery to beneficiary communities.

The project represents part of Uganda’s broader strategy to expand rural water access through strategic partnerships with international development organizations.
