The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is Uganda’s principal agency responsible for regulating, coordinating, and supervising all matters related to the environment. Established under the National Environment Act, NEMA’s primary mandate is to ensure sustainable environmental management and protection across the country.
NEMA operates as a semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE). While it functions independently in executing its environmental oversight duties, it aligns its strategic direction and policy implementation with MWE to support national objectives in sustainable natural resource management, climate change adaptation, and environmental governance.
