About the Bwindi Impenetrable
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a renowned destination for mountain gorilla tracking, home to over 400 mountain gorillas, roughly half of the world’s population. Located in southwestern Uganda, the park offers a unique opportunity to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four main gorilla tracking sectors: Located in the northern part of the park, it’s the oldest and most visited sector. Situated in the eastern region, it’s known for its stunning views and habituated gorilla families. Located in the southern part of the park, it’s a popular spot for gorilla tracking. This sector hosts the largest number of habituated gorilla families and is the only sector where gorilla habituation is conducted.
Gorilla Families
Some of the notable gorilla families in Bwindi include:
-Mubare Family: The first habituated family in 1991, with 16 gorillas and 1 silverback.
– Nshongi Family: The largest group with 25 members.
– Bweza Family: A family of 23 mountain gorillas led by a silverback named Kakono.
It’s recommended to book in advance, at least three months prior to the tracking date. The permit fee contributes to conservation efforts and local communities. Gorilla tracking requires a good level of physical fitness, as the trek can be challenging. Visitors are also required to follow safety guidelines and maintain a distance of 8 meters from the gorillas.
The best time to visit Bwindi for gorilla tracking is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. However, gorillas can be tracked year-round, and each season offers a unique experience.
